Steward

Plain-English bookkeeping for tiny nonprofits.

Steward is a Mac app for the volunteer treasurer of a small nonprofit. You record money in and money out in plain English; underneath, Steward keeps proper double-entry books with restricted funds, writes donor acknowledgment letters and produces what your 990, your auditor and the next treasurer will need.

What it does

Books a volunteer can keep

Steward was built first for Walpurgis Words for Literacy, a small 501(c)(3), and designed from the start for other small nonprofits.

  • Money in, money out

Record gifts, expenses and transfers in plain words. Beginner view has no debits, credits or account codes; Accountant view shows them all.

  • Real books underneath

Audit-grade double-entry books with restricted and unrestricted funds. Posted entries are never deleted; mistakes are voided or reversed and stay visible.

  • Bank and GoFundMe imports

Import bank CSV files with duplicate checks and categorization rules, review every row before it posts, and reconcile month by month.

  • Donor letters

Keep track of donors and gifts, including restricted and in-kind gifts, and produce IRS-compliant acknowledgment letters and year-end statements.

  • Reports and the 990

Financial statements, fund balances, a gross-receipts check, a 990-N walkthrough, a 990-EZ worksheet and an auditor packet.

  • Ready for the next treasurer

A full data export with a plain-English data dictionary, backups and restore, and a handoff document for whoever takes over.

Plain English first

It explains itself

Most treasurers of small nonprofits aren’t accountants. Every accounting idea in Steward has a “What’s this?” explanation, and when Steward notices something, it tells you what it saw, why it matters and the one button that fixes it. Anything consequential gets a clear confirmation, never a bare “Are you sure?”.

  • Nothing posts to your books without you seeing it first
  • One portable file per organization, with automatic backups beside it
  • Bank access is read-only, and bank logins are never stored
