Unhide Me

Hidden files, one click away.

Unhide Me puts Finder’s hidden files behind one click in the menu bar. Dotfiles and other hidden items appear or disappear across Finder, and a right-click Service hides or unhides single files and folders.

What it does

What Unhide Me does

A small menu bar helper for one job: showing and hiding the files Finder keeps out of sight.

  • One click in the menu bar

The Show hidden files toggle flips Finder’s setting, so dotfiles and other hidden items appear or disappear everywhere in Finder. The menu’s first line shows whether they’re shown or hidden.

  • Instant, no flicker

With Accessibility permission, Unhide Me sends Finder its own Command-Shift-Period shortcut and Finder redraws in place. Without it, Unhide Me restarts Finder, and the desktop flickers briefly.

  • The icon shows the state

The menu bar icon is an open eye while hidden files are shown and a crossed-out eye while they’re hidden.

  • Stays in sync

If Terminal or another tool changes the setting, the icon catches up within about 2 seconds. Command-Shift-Period pressed in Finder itself isn’t detected, because Finder doesn’t save that change.

  • Hide a single file

Select files or folders in Finder and choose Services › Toggle Hidden Flag. It sets each item’s own hidden flag, so nothing is renamed to a dotfile.

  • Launch at login

An optional menu toggle opens Unhide Me when you log in. There’s no Dock icon and no window, only the eye in the menu bar.

Permissions

What it asks for

  • Accessibility (optional). Needed only for the instant, flicker-free toggle. Choose Enable Instant Toggle… in the menu and macOS asks for it. Without it, toggling restarts Finder instead.
  • The Toggle Hidden Flag Service. macOS often leaves a new Service switched off. Turn it on once in System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Services, under Files and Folders.
  • Files in Desktop, Documents or Downloads. macOS may ask once before Unhide Me can change the hidden flag of items in those folders.
  • Launch at login. Registers Unhide Me as a login item, only if you turn it on.

Coming from invisibliX?

invisibliX was a 2013 utility for Intel Macs and is no longer developed. Unhide Me is our modern replacement for it, built natively for Apple silicon, with the toggle in the menu bar and a Finder Service for hiding single files.

Getting started
  1. Open Unhide Me and look for the eye in the menu bar.
  2. Choose Show hidden files to show or hide them across Finder.
  3. Choose Enable Instant Toggle… if you’d like toggles without the Finder restart.
