MenuSearch

Search, calculate, go. From the menu bar.

Press Option-Space anywhere and a search field drops down from the menu bar. Find apps and the files you used recently, work out a sum as you type, or jump to a website, all from one field.

What it does

What MenuSearch does

A keyboard-first search box for people who’d rather type than click, and who paste results into other apps.

  • Option-Space, anywhere

Opens and closes the search from any app. If another app already uses Option-Space, the right-click menu tells you. The shortcut can’t be changed in this version.

  • Find apps fast

Searches Spotlight for apps, ignoring case and accents and matching the start of any word in the name. Exact matches rank first, duplicates show once and helper apps stay hidden.

  • Recent files first

Files you’ve opened rank first, newest on top, with a Finder-style location. System and Library folders, app bundles and developer clutter such as node_modules are left out; iCloud Drive is kept.

  • Math as you type

Arithmetic, powers, percentages (“15% of 80”), roots, trig in degrees, logarithms and rounding, with pi, e and tau. Return or Command-C copies the result as a plain number.

  • Sites and web searches

Type something that looks like a web address to open it. Anything else ends with a Search the web result that opens in your default browser.

  • Keyboard first

Arrow keys or Tab move the selection, Return opens, Command-Return shows a file in Finder, and Escape clears, then closes. Focus goes back to the app you were in.

Permissions and privacy

Nothing to allow, nothing sent

  • No permissions to grant. The global shortcut uses a system hotkey that doesn’t need Accessibility access. Open at Login, in the right-click menu, is the only optional setting.
  • Searches stay on your Mac. MenuSearch searches your Mac’s own Spotlight index. It has no analytics and no accounts, and goes online only when you pick a web result, which opens in your browser.
  • The clipboard only when you ask. A calculator result is copied only when you press Return or Command-C.
