Add or burn in subtitles

Add subtitles you can switch on and off, pick up subtitle files automatically, or burn subtitles into the picture.

3-minute read Applies to Rewrap 1.0.0 Updated

Rewrap can add subtitles as tracks you switch on and off in your player, or draw them permanently into the picture.

Soft subtitles

Soft subtitles are stored as MP4 text tracks, with their language and their default and forced flags, so your player can offer them in its subtitle menu.

  • Subtitle files next to the video are picked up on their own when their name matches: movie.srt or movie.en.srt next to movie.mkv.
  • Drop more .srt, .ass, .ssa or .vtt files onto a video that’s already loaded.
  • Set each subtitle track’s language in the track table.

Burn-in

Burning in draws the subtitles into the video itself, so they show on any player but can’t be turned off. It works for:

  • text subtitles (SRT, ASS, SSA and WebVTT), drawn with their ASS styling, and
  • image subtitles from Blu-ray (PGS) and DVD.

Burning in re-encodes the video. Copying the video untouched isn’t possible when something is drawn onto it, so expect a slower job.

Need to fix the subtitles first?

Timing that drifts or overlapping lines are best fixed before converting. Our subtitle editor, Retitle, is in development for exactly that.
