Clean up clicks and hiss in old recordings

Use Bitrate’s optional clean-up to reduce clicks, pops and background hiss while you convert.

2-minute read Applies to Bitrate 1.1.1 Updated

Tape transfers, vinyl rips and voice memos often carry clicks, pops and a steady hiss. Bitrate can reduce them while it converts, using FFmpeg’s declick and denoise filters.

Turn it on

Set Clean up audio to Light, Medium or Strong, then convert as usual. It’s off by default, and Bitrate remembers your choice between launches, so remember to switch it off again for music that’s already clean.

Which level?

  • Light: start here. It removes the worst clicks and a little hiss.
  • Medium: for noticeable surface noise or tape hiss.
  • Strong: for very noisy sources. Listen to the result: strong noise reduction can make voices and instruments sound dull.

Tip: try one file at a couple of levels and compare before converting a whole batch. Your originals are never changed.
